What an index copy proves
An index copy — everyone calls it Index-2 — is the certified summary the Sub-Registrar keeps of every registered document: sale deed, gift deed, mortgage, release, lease. It records that a registration actually happened, on what date, between which parties, over which property, and for what consideration. It does not reproduce the full deed; it is the official one-page proof that the deed exists and what its essentials were.
That makes it the fastest, cheapest way to answer the two questions that matter most before any property decision: did this transaction really happen, and on what terms?
