People often stop at an affidavit and assume the job is done. It is not. An affidavit is a statement you made. A gazette notification is the state of Gujarat publishing that change in its official record. Passport offices, banks, universities and the RTO know the difference, and the ones that matter will ask for the gazette.

Do you actually need one?
Not every case does. Here is the honest split — and if yours falls on the right, we will say so instead of opening a file you do not need.
A gazette usually helps when
- You are changing your name or surname by choice
- Documents show clearly different names and you need one identity
- A department has specifically asked for a gazette
- The passport office has raised a name objection
- A minor's name must be formally changed
- Your Aadhaar name-update limit is already used up
A gazette may not be needed when
- It is a small typing error the department corrects directly
- A marriage certificate is already accepted as proof
- The matter actually needs a court order
- An affidavit alone satisfies the specific requirement
- The authority allows a direct online correction

Affidavit
A sworn declaration of the old name, new name and reason, e-stamped and notarised. Same day.
Newspaper advertisement
One English and one Gujarati daily. We place both and keep the original cuttings, which the gazette office asks to see.
Publication
The application goes to the Government Printing Press. Once published, you receive the gazette copy.

Tell us where the gazette will be used before drafting starts. For an Aadhaar update the old name in the gazette must match the Aadhaar spelling exactly — including initials, spacing and order. Drafting without knowing the destination is how these files fail.
Checking your own gazette status — free
You do not need to pay anyone for this, including us. The Government of Gujarat e-Gazette portal has a public name-change search, and it is free.
The trick almost nobody knows: fill in only one box. Your mobile number is easiest, or the application number from your receipt. Leave everything else empty, then search. Every extra box you fill has to match exactly, and that is the usual reason people see nothing.
Why it says "no records found" when your file is fine

| Eight districts appear twice | Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot and a few others are listed once on their own and once as Municipal Corporation. Try the other one — or leave district blank. |
| Too many boxes filled | Clear the form and search on the mobile number alone. |
| Not published yet | Filing and publication are different dates. Until the Press publishes the issue there is nothing to show — and nobody can speed that up. |

What to update afterwards, and in what order
A gazette proves the change; it updates nothing by itself. Doing it out of order is what causes most of the pain.

Gazette questions
Is an affidavit alone enough?
For some minor purposes, yes. For a passport, a bank, a university record or the RTO, no — they ask for the gazette. If the change matters, do it properly the first time.

No. It is proof of the change, not an update. Each authority is applied to separately, under its own rules.

Yes. A minor's name change is filed by the parents, with the child's birth certificate, school record and the parents' identity documents.

A state gazette notification is a recognised government publication and is commonly accepted across India. Acceptance still rests with the authority you present it to, so tell us the destination in advance.
